James Paul Churchill was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the court on December 20, 1974, after being nominated by President Gerald Ford. Churchill served on senior status from December 31, 1989, to June 29, 2020, when he died.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Eastern District of Michigan

Churchill was a circuit judge for the 40th Judicial Circuit of Michigan from 1965-1974. He was nominated to the Eastern District of Michigan by Gerald Ford on December 2, 1974, to a seat vacated by Stephen Roth. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 18, 1974, and received his commission on December 20, 1974. Churchill served as chief judge from 1989-1989 and assumed senior status on December 31, 1989. His service ended when he died on June 29, 2020.[1] Churchill was succeeded in this position by Robert Cleland.
