Robin Williams, a seasoned and savvy 35 year career not-for-profit community leader is seeking to unseat Indiana DistrIct 30 State Representative Mike Karickhoff (R) in the upcoming November election. Driven by her passionate support for education, job creation, Veterans, Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, the Arts and quality of life concerns, she is ready to tackle the issues and speak truth to power.

It’s no surprise that Williams made the official announcement of her candidacy on the first day of Black History Month, as she has been a lifelong advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. As a journalist, Williams’ coverage of Civil Rights and race issues has been published in the Martin Luther King Jr. legacy publication SCLC National Magazine and in the New York Times. Her historical account of the Black Indian culture was installed at the library of the Smithsonian Institution in 2018.

During her career, Williams has spearheaded and directed several government-funded Arts & Cultural institutions in the Midwest and South. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University- Bloomington and a Master’s Degree from Liberty University.
  • CLASSROOMS — teachers should be empowered to teach the truth, rather than be imprisoned by politics. As a former cultural educator for K-12 students, as well as College students, I firmly believe that students should have the opportunity to learn history and cultural context in order to make their own informed, educated decisions about life. A well-rounded education provides children with the beauty of discovery and the discernment to understand the world . Our educators and education system are in danger. When I am elected, I will champion the integrity of public and private education.
  • CULTURE— the Arts are a reflection of the human experience, therefore everyone should have equal access and the right to express themselves. I have 35 years of experience in creating and delivering arts and culture initiatives through local, county and state governmental programs. I believe that a community’s cultural assets, music, theater, museums, parks, community festivals and literacy programming should not be just for the privileged, but for everyone. Arts and cultural opportunities enhance and enrich the quality of life in every community. When elected, I will ensure that every citizen in my district has access to quality cultural programs.
  • COMMUNITY—it takes true investment to nurture a healthy community—Investment in sustainable job creation and workforce development, in clean energy, stability for our veterans, equal rights for women and minorities. A strong community is a place where people truly thrive, not just survive.
“It’s a crucial time to make critical decisions about education,” asserts Williams, a former educator. “Teachers should be empowered to teach the truth, rather than being imprisoned by politics”.

Many educators In our district and around the State of Indiana felt threatened and compromised by the legislation HB 1134, introduced by State Representative Tony Cook. Even though this damaging legislation did not pass vote in the Senate, during a recent 3rd House luncheon presentation, Cook, along with Senator Buck and my opponent Mike Karickhoff have vowed to bring yet another version of this legislation back for consideration.

When elected, I will fight for the rights of teachers to maintain the integrity of their profession, as well as champion their important and impactful roles to inspire and illuminate learning for our children.
In 2018 I relocated back to Kokomo, where my family has played an integral role in agriculture, business and the Arts in the Howard County area for the last 170 years. I was inspired to take the political baton of my late father Mel Ligon, who died in the middle of his 1994 US Congressional, 5th District campaign in Kokomo.

My father was an old-school Republican when those values actually meant something. Prior to running for Congress, he was a news journalist, getting his start at the United Nations in the late 60s amidst political upheaval and racial turmoil. His incredible international footprint and perspective helped to shape my beliefs and values about civil rights and human rights.

Much later in my career had the opportunity of working with civil rights icons in Atlanta, most recently having an opportunity to sit with and be inspired by yet another United Nations connection, Ambassador Andrew Young. To literally sit at the foot of a man who was a right hand to Dr. King, learning from the stories of his youth in the movement and his 90 year fight for justice, humanity and equality, I realized that I have to carry the torch of those who came before us. I have to make a difference.

Men like my father and Ambassador Young labored and fought the good fight for all of us to have the right to vote, to be heard and to make a positive change in our world. Not much has changed since the late 1960’s. Our world is still experiencing an international humanitarian crisis with War in the Ukraine, and our own democracy has been shaken off its axis. As Dr. King said, “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

I choose a creative path, as I always have throughout my career, however at this time I choose to forge a path to give an empowered voice to the voiceless and truly represent the people. That is why I’m running for office.
Truth, integrity, selflessness, humanity, fairness, and a strong resolve to advocate for the people.
Principles of integrity, humanity, diversity, equity, truthfulness, an ardent belief in justice for all and a strong resolve to fight for a bill to the finish line. I fight for what is right and I am not moved by political dogma.
Mine. “Rhythm, Ritual & Resistance”…….because I spent 20 years of my life researching a subject that no one had ever written about and enjoyed every minute of it! I’m proud to say that this book is in the Smithsonian Library now.
I don’t believe that it’s essential for legislators to have previous experience in government or politics, but I do believe that anyone who has notable experience serving people in their community in in impactful way has the foundation to serve in a legislative process.
It’s essential to build relationships with other legislators, across the aisle especially. I refuse to participate in divisive or derisive politics. When policies or bills become about personal beliefs and not about the peoples best interests then there is a problem.
