Candidate Connection

Christina Zacny participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 23, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Christina Zacny's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Legalizing industrial hemp and implementing renewable energy policies to rebuild our communities and local economies
2) Passing hate crime legislation without carve-outs or exceptions
3) Removing barriers to accessing health care[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about building policy systems that put people first. When you put people in the center, you create dynamic policies around healthy environments and healthy economies. We can protect our environment, our residents, and our economy if we are smart about it. We need community dialogue based policies, and I am excited to bring that to the statehouse.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Christina Zacny answered the following:

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

That depends on the type of experience. If your experience is in diverting benefits to a donor class, then no, that only benefits your donor class. If your experience is solely in Party politics, then no, that only benefits one Party. My experience is in advocacy, which requires working outside political boundaries. It requires understanding the different layers of government. Because I have never been a "single issue advocate," I can see how different issues and interests are inter-connected even when they're opposing interests. That is highly beneficial experience that is too often overlooked.[5]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Of course. Our system of government only works when we have good working relationships with our fellow legislators. We work in caucuses and bi-partisan committees which cannot function without healthy relationships. Legislators need to compromise. It takes good relationships to negotiate good compromises. Legislators also need to fight for their core principles, which requires good relationships to do successfully.[5]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
One person's story immediately comes to mind, that of Eric Cole. Eric Cole was a 4-year old boy, playing happily with his sister at a babysitter's house when he found an unsecured gun. He accidentally shot himself with it. He died. Eric's sister found his body. Eric's parents were informed by local police that their child was dead. Since Eric's death, hundreds of other parents have gotten that visit from police. Hundreds of families will never be made whole again. Right now, we look into a future where hundreds and hundreds of children die from gun violence. It has to stop. We should be protecting our children, not burying them. Something as simple as a gun lock could have saved Eric's life. There is so much we could be doing if we only our elected officials had the will to do it, and it's shameful that they don't have that will.[5]
