William E. McCarthy
William E. McCarthy was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department. He was appointed by Governor Pataki to the Second Department of the Appellate Division in 2006 but was re-designated as an additional Justice of the Third Department, effective January 30, 2009. His term ended on December 31, 2018.[1][2][3]
Education
Judge McCarthy received his B.A. degree from the State University College of New York at Potsdam in 1985 and his J.D. degree from Albany Law School in 1988.[1]
Career
Judge McCarthy began his legal career in October of 1990 as the principal law clerk to New York State Supreme Court Justice Edward Conway. In January of 1994, he began clerking for State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Harris. He then clerked for Edward Sheridan, who was a Court of Claims Judge and Acting Supreme Court Justice, from April of 1997 to January of 1998. After that, he became the senior assistant counsel to Governor Pataki until June of 2004, when Pataki appointed him to the Supreme Court of the State of New York, 3rd Judicial District. He was elected to this position in November of 2004 and his term ended in 2018. He now serves in the Appellate Division.[1]
