Shawn Z. Tarrant was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 7 of the Baltimore City Council in Maryland. He lost the primary election that took place on April 26, 2016.

Tarrant is also a former Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 40 from 2007 to 2015. Tarrant served as Chief Deputy Majority Whip from 2013 to 2014, as well as Deputy Majority Whip from 2011 to 2013. He has served as 2nd Vice Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party.

Elections for the Maryland House of Delegates took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 24, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 25, 2014. Antonio Hayes and incumbents Frank M. Conaway, Jr. and Barbara A. Robinson defeated incumbent Shawn Z. Tarrant, Douglas R. Barry, Marvin "Doc" Cheatham, Quianna M. Cooke, Rob "Bobby" LaPin, Bill Marker and Timothy Mercer in the Democratic primary and were unopposed in the general election. Tarrant re-entered the race as a write-in candidate.[2][3][4]

On November 7, 2006, Shawn Tarrant ran for District 40 of the Maryland House of Delegates, winning the third of three seats, losing to Frank Conaway, Jr. and Barbara Robinson but beating Jan Danforth.[6]
