Ronnie J. Greer is an Article III federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He assumed senior status on June 30, 2018. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.[1]

Education

A Tennessee native, Greer graduated from East Tennessee State University with his bachelor's degree in 1974 and later graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law with his juris doctor degree in 1980.[2]

Professional career

Greer started out as a Special Assistant to former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander from 1980 to 1981. In 1981, he became a private practice attorney in Tennessee. In 1982, Greer was campaign manager for U.S. Senate Candidate Robert Beard who lost to Democrat Jim Sasser in the 1982 Election. After his campaign work, Greer became a County attorney for Greene County from 1985 to 1986 before being elected a State senator in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1986 to 1994.[2]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Tennessee

On the recommendation of Senators Bill Frist and Lamar Alexander, Greer was nominated by George W. Bush on April 9, 2003, to a seat vacated by Thomas Hull as Hull went on senior status. Greer was confirmed by the Senate on June 11, 2003, and received commission on June 12, 2003.[2]
