James Mahan is an Article III federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. He joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.[1] He assumed senior status on June 29, 2018.
Education
Mahan graduated from the University of Charleston with his bachelor's degree in 1965 and later graduated from the Vanderbilt University Law School with his J.D. in 1973.[1]
Military service
Mahan served in the US Navy on active duty from 1966 to 1969 and also in the Reserves from 1970 to 1972.[1]
Profesional career
Mahan spent his legal career as an attorney in private practice, from 1973 to 1999. From 1999 to 2002, Mahan was a judge for the Nevada Eighth Judicial District Court based in Clark County.
Judicial career
District of Nevada
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator John Ensign, Mahan was nominated by President George W. Bush on September 10, 2001, to a new seat created by 114 Stat. 2762. Mahan was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 25, 2002, on a unopposed 81-0-19 vote and received commission on January 30, 2002.[2] He assumed senior status on June 29, 2018.
