Richard McAdams
Richard J. McAdams was an associate justice on the Sixth District of the California Courts of Appeal. He was appointed to this position by Gov. Gray Davis and took the oath of office on September 26, 2003.[1] His final term was set to expire on January 7, 2019,[2] but he retired from the bench on February 28, 2011.[3]
Education
Justice McAdams was born in Albany, CA. He received an A.B. degree from The University of California, Berkeley in 1965 and a J.D. degree from the Hastings College of Law in 1968. [1]
Career
McAdams began his legal career in 1969 as an associate attorney with the law firm of Jarvis, Miler and Stender in San Francisco. The following year, he joined the Legal Aid Society of Santa Cruz County, where he worked as an attorney and then as the acting director until 1973. That year, he worked as a solo practitioner. From 1974 to 1977, he worked with the firm Fox, McAdams and Popin.
McAdams first became a judge when Gov. Jerry Brown appointed him to the Santa Cruz County Municipal Court in 1977. He was the Presiding Judge of this court in 1980, 1984, 1987 and 1990. He was assigned to the Superior Court of Santa Cruz County in 1994, dealing with the family law calendar there for four years until he was elected to the Superior Court in 1998. He served there until his appointment to the appellate court in 2003.[1]
