Patrick G. Murphy was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Murphy retired from the court on December 1, 2013.[1] After stepping down, he returned to private practice.[2]

Early life and education

After serving three years in the United States Marines from 1966 to 1969, Murphy graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with his bachelor's and J.D. degrees in 1974 and 1978.[3]

Professional career

Murphy served as a private practice attorney in Marion, Ill., from 1978 to 1998.[3]

Judicial career

Southern District of Illinois

On the recommendation of Senators Carol Mosley Braun and Paul Simon, Murphy was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois by President Bill Clinton on July 31, 1997 to a seat vacated by William Stiehl. Murphy was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 2, 1998 on a full Senate vote and received commission on April 3, 1998. Murphy served as chief judge of the court from 2000 to 2007.[3] Murphy left the court and returned to private practice on December 1, 2013
