Diana Jane Gribbon Motz is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. She joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Prior to joining the Fourth Circuit, Judge Motz was an associate judge on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.[1]

On December 13, 2021, Motz announced that she would assume senior status upon the confirmation of her successor.[2]

Motz graduated from Vassar College with a bachelor's degree in 1965, and from the University of Virginia School of Law with her J.D. in 1968.[1]

Motz was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit by President Bill Clinton on January 27, 1994, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. The American Bar Association rated Motz Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[3] Hearings on Motz's nomination were held on May 25, 1994, and her nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on June 14, 1994. Motz was confirmed in the U.S. Senate on a voice vote on June 15, 1994, and she received her commission on June 16, 1994.[1][4]

On December 10, 2013, a three-judge panel of the Fourth Circuit found that Sheriff Robert Jones, who fired a deputy in retaliation for exercising his First Amendment rights, was not entitled to qualified immunity and must answer to the $1.1 million jury award established in a federal district trial court.[5] The three-judge panel included Judge Diana Motz, Judge Roger Gregory, and Senior Judge Andre Davis.
