Charles Alexander Shaw was a judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. He joined the court in 1993 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). On December 31, 2009, Shaw assumed senior status. He served as a senior judge until his death on April 12, 2020.[1][2]

Early life and education

Shaw graduated with his bachelor's degree from Harris Stowe State College in 1966. He obtained his master's in business administration (M.B.A.) in 1971 from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He then graduated from the Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law with his J.D. in 1974.[3]

Professional career

  • 1987-1993: Circuit Court Judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri
  • 1980-1987: Assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Missouri
  • 1976-1980: Private practice
  • 1974-1976: Staff attorney, Enforcement Division of the National Labor Relations Board[3]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Eastern District of Missouri

On the recommendation of Congressman William Clay, Sr., Shaw was nominated by President Bill Clinton on October 25, 1993, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089 which was approved by Congress. Shaw was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 20, 1993, on a Senate vote. He received commission on November 22, 1993. Shaw assumed senior status on December 31, 2009. His service ended on April 12, 2020, when he died.[3] Shaw was succeeded in this position by John A. Ross.
