Chief Justice Sarah Parker retired from the North Carolina Supreme Court after 21 years on the bench. She served as an associate justice for the court from 1993 until 2006, when she was named chief justice. Parker retired from the bench on August 31, 2014, when she reached the mandatory retirement age of 72. Chief Justice Parker received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964. She then joined the Peace Corps and served for two years teaching English in Ankara, Turkey. It was during her time in the Peace Corps when she decided to go to law school, and she did so, graduating in 1969 with her J.D. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. From 1969 until her appointment to the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 1984, Parker worked as an attorney in private practice. She then served as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals until 1993, when she assumed the bench on the North Carolina Supreme Court. Former associate justice Bob Orr described Parker as "a quintessential professional. She has a sense of the history and tradition of the court as well as the system. She’s been a good chief justice in difficult times.” In acknowledgment of her distinguished career, Parker was inducted into the North Carolina Women's Hall of Fame in 2011. Her other awards include: the Distinguished Woman of North Carolina Award in 1997, the North Carolina Association of Black County Officials Humanitarian Award in 2003, and the UNC Law Alumnus Association Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004. In 2013, a scholarship was established in her honor by the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys.
