State legislators who ran for new office, 2014-2016
| Competitiveness Studies by Year |
|---|
In the 2014 and 2016 elections, about 18 percent of incumbent state legislators declined to run for re-election. About one-quarter of retiring incumbents sought election to new office in the same year.
Ballotpedia has collected data on incumbents who ran for statewide or federal office. In 2014, this amounted to 283 state legislators running for a different statewide or a federal office. Those 283 legislators represent 27.5 percent of all state senators and state representatives that left office in 2014.
Beginning in 2018, Ballotpedia expanded this study to include all political offices within our coverage scope. For the 2018 version of this study, click here. For the 2020 version of this study, click here.
