Barry G. Silverman is a federal appeals judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit based in San Francisco. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Silverman announced in a letter to President Obama on October 11, 2015, that he would take senior status, effective October 11, 2016. Senior status is a classification for federal judges at all levels who are semi-retired.[1]
Early life and education
Silverman graduated from Arizona State with his bachelor's degree in 1973 and later graduated from Arizona State Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1976.[2]
Professional career
Silverman began his legal career as a Assistant city prosecutor for the Phoenix City Prosecutor's Office from 1976 to 1977 before becoming Deputy county attorney for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office from 1977 to 1979 before being a Superior court commissioner for Maricopa County from 1979 to 1984. In 1984, Silverman became a superior court judge in the Arizona Superior Court from 1984 to 1995.[2]

Silverman began his federal judicial career with the United States District Court for the District of Arizona as a federal magistrate judge as Silverman was appointed to a eight year full-time term in 1995. Silverman served in that capacity until 1998 when he was nominated to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.[3]

Silverman was nominated by President Bill Clinton on November 8, 1997 to a seat vacated by William Canby, Jr.. Silverman was confirmed by the Senate on January 28, 1998 on a majority voice vote and received commission on February 4, 1998. Silverman announced in October 2015 that he would assume senior status.[4][1]
