As of the 2013–2014 school year, there were 18,567 school districts in the United States, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Of the 50,044,522 students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, 49,900,660 (99.71 percent) were served by those institutions.[1]

A total of 27,431,117 students, or 54.81 percent of all students, attended schools within the nation's 1,000 largest school districts by enrollment. Every state except Maine and Vermont had at least one school district in the top 1,000 districts based on 2013–2014 enrollment data.[1]

The map below shades each state according to its percentage of the student enrollment in the 1,000 largest school districts by enrollment in the 2013–2014 school year. Hovering over the state displays its percentage.
