William John Castagna was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter (D). Castagna served on senior status from June 29, 1992 until December 18, 2020, when he died.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Pennsylvania, Castagna graduated from the University of Florida at Gainesville with his bachelor's degree in 1949 and his J.D. degree in 1967.[1]

Military service

Castagna served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1945 during World War II.[1]

Professional career

Castagna spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Florida from 1949 to 1979.[1]

Judicial career

Middle District of Florida

Castagna was nominated by Jimmy Carter (D) on June 5, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Castagna was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 23, 1979, and received commission on July 24, 1979. Castagna later assumed senior status on June 29, 1992. He served on senior status until he died on December 18, 2020.[1]
