Carolyn Dineen King is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. She joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. King served as the chief judge of the Fifth Circuit from 1999 to 2006. On December 31, 2013, King assumed senior status after 34 years on the bench.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Syracuse, New York, King graduated from Smith College with her bachelor's degree in 1959 and from Yale Law School with her J.D. in 1962.[1]

King was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on April 30, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. King was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 12, 1979, and she received her commission the next day. King served as the chief judge of the court from 1999 to 2006. King took senior status on December 31, 2013, after 34 years on the bench.[1]
