Richard A. Schell is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He joined the court in 1988 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Schell graduated from Southern Methodist University with his bachelor's degree in 1972 and with his J.D. in 1975.[1]

Schell was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on April 13, 1988, to a seat vacated by William Steger. Hearings on Schell's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 16, 1988, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) on behalf of then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on May 24, 1988. Schell was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on May 27, 1988, and he received his commission on June 6, 1988. Schell served as the chief judge of the court from 1994 to 2001. Schell elected to take senior status beginning on March 10, 2015.[1][2]
