John L. Coffey was a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. He joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He served on senior status from 2004 to 2012, passing away in November 2012.[1][2]
Early life and education
A native of Milwaukee, Coffey graduated from Marquette University with his bachelor's degree in 1943 and later graduated from Marquette University Law School with his juris doctor degree in 1948. Coffey also served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments
On the recommendation of Wisconsin U.S. Senator Robert Kasten, Coffey was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit by President Ronald Reagan on February 19, 1982 to seat vacated by Thomas Fairchild. Coffey was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 3, 1982 on a senate vote and received commission on May 10, 1982. Coffey assumed senior status on July 2, 2004.[1]
