William Cameron Canby, Jr. is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. He assumed senior status on May 23, 1996.[1]

Early life and education

A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Canby graduated from Yale University with his bachelor's degree in 1953, and from the University of Minnesota Law School with his LL.B. in 1956.[2]

Military career

Canby served as a lieutenant and judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1958.[2]

Judicial career

Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

Canby was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on April 2, 1980, to a seat vacated by Ozell Trask. Canby was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 21, 1980, and he received his commission on May 23, 1980. Canby assumed senior status on May 23, 1996.[2] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Barry Silverman.
