Raymond L. Acosta was a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. He joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as the district attorney for the District of Puerto Rico. He assumed senior status on June 1, 1994. He retired from duty on February 1, 2010. Acosta died on December 23, 2014.[1][2]

Education

Acosta graduated from Princeton University in 1948 and went on to graduate from Rutgers University School of Law with his J.D. in 1951.[1][3]

Military service

Acosta served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He served in the European Theater and participated in the invasion at Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944. He was awarded a Commendation Medal.[3]

Judicial career

District of Puerto Rico

On the recommendation of the Puerto Rican at-large Congressional delegation, Acosta was nominated by Ronald Reagan on September 9, 1982, to a seat vacated by Judge Jose Toledo. Acosta was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 29, 1982, and received commission on September 30, 1982. He assumed senior status on June 1, 1994.[1] Acosta was succeeded in this position by Judge Jay Garcia-Gregory. Acosta retired from duty on February 1, 2010.[3]
