Frank J. Magill was a federal judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. He joined the court in 1986 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He served on senior status with the court from April 1, 1997, until his death on June 2, 2013.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Verona, North Dakota, Magill graduated from Georgetown College (now Georgetown University) with a bachelor's in Foreign Service in 1951 and his LL.B. in 1955. Magill earned his master's degree from Columbia University in 1953.[1]

Military career

Magill served as a U.S. Navy seaman from 1945 to 1947.[1]

Magill was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on January 21, 1986, to a seat vacated by Myron Bright as Bright assumed senior status. Hearings on Magill's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on February 19, 1986, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on February 27, 1986. Magill was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on March 3, 1986, and he received his commission the next day. Magill assumed senior status on the court on April 1, 1997, and he served as a senior judge until his death on June 2, 2013.[1][2] He was succeeded on the Eighth Circuit by Judge John D. Kelly.
